Lacuna Inc. – For the Focused Erasure of Troubling Memories
April 27th, 2007
While it doesn’t surprise me that there are several companies offering high-end Photoshopping services for those vain or foolish enough to need touched-up digital pictures of themselves, it’s still a little eerie to read that people – whole memories – are being eliminated:
The restoration artists are also able to edit people in to and out of photographs. Many customers ask the services to edit former husbands or wives out of cherished family photos. One bride who came to FixUpPix.com (which charges $29.99 for any type of photo repair) was happy with her appearance only in the one picture in which her husband’s eyes were closed.
What struck me most about this service isn’t the elimination of people – how many jilted wives have taken a pair of scissors to the wedding album? – but that this service is driving a wedge between the lives we lead in Real Life and our digital selves. Our avatars are no longer a reflection of what happens in our lives but the lives of a separate, bizarro user. You know, the one that never married the jerk.
But really, wouldn’t it just be easier to go here?
