Better to buy or rent: Interactive Infographics
April 12th, 2007
The New York Times did an interactive feature on the relative benefits of home ownership and rental. Gosh, it’s beautiful! Tufte would be proud. I love how the sliders along the left result in the graph updating, live. There must be tens of millions of possible graphs depending on your living situation. I hope they leave it online – someday I might be faced with the rent/buy decision!
What if newspapers regularly ran super-informational interactive graphics, that applied the news to our lives? I hope I can still read it in a portable format.
One more thing – many bemoan the reduction of resolution, the loss of page real-estate when designing for the web… certainly we have fewer pixels, but I think this graphic demonstrates that the potential for presenting extremely rich information is not reduced.
