WorldChanging Hits SF

Alex Steffen at IDEO SF

Alex Steffen, Sarah Rich (also of Inhabitat fame) and all hard working folks over at WorldChanging are in SF! If you happen to be in the area, they’re giving a panel discussion at the Commonwealth Club tonight at 5:30pm.

This week, I had the pleasure of catching up with them on their book tour at the 111Minna Gallery, a hip and hidden away gallery in SoMa and at a talk last night at IDEO in San Francisco.

In the richness of classic WorldChanging style, Alex shared with us a multitude of examples of what designers, researchers and citizens are doing to change the world. Some highlights include citing a statistic that the average hand drill only gets between 6-20 minutes of use over its lifetime, which begs the question, do you want a drill, or do you want the service of drilling holes and driving screws? ... emerging services economies such car sharing and the less obvious, but mainstream services of NetFlix and GameFly come to mind.

Alex also shared with us a little secret about the book. You know those little laser cut perforations on the book sleeve and the “blank” book cover directly behind the perforations? Now, think about what might happen as you use and wear in the book? : ) ...and while you’re reading the book, be sure to check out pg 153. Vestal’s been immortalized in print. Thanks WorldChanging!
