American Gulag Bracelets
December 4th, 2006
Created by Richter Studio, a Rhode Island-based artist/designer Jack Richter, the American Gulag bracelet and necklace “symbolize our government’s barbaric dogma of physical and psychological imprisonment” on both foreign and domestic critics of George W. Bush’s agenda. A portion of all sales will be donated to a human rights organization “dedicated to ending these injusticies.”
Obviously, Mr. Richter feels strongly about the current administration – as he should, since its human rights record has been deplorable – but we’re not sure a provocative bracelet is necessarily the answer. Barbed wire, while a frightening symbol, is almost too symbolic, too interpretational to cover the range of abuses Richter sees under the ‘war on terror.’ Perhaps the actual images of people’s faces, hidden behind masks or obscured by wire fences, may be the most provocative symbol of all.
