In the spirit of the book… wouldn’t it be better to encoutage people to walk, or take public transportation to their local bookstore? Amazon horribly over-packages everything!

Paul, you’re absolutely right. Walking, biking, and taking public transportation are definitely encouraged. So is supporting your local bookstore. (if you’re ever in Portland,OR, you’ve got to check out Powell’s http://www.powells.com/)
In this particular case, we’re hoping to make a bigger impact by hacking a system. Purchasing the Worldchanging book via Amazon just might tip the scale and bring up its ranking a notch or two and keep its publishers happy and keep the book printing.
