DIY Brick Oven 2.0
November 13th, 2006
Taking our cues from Anonymous, SYN, and Jimmy, whose scatological critiques of the original DIY brick oven brought shame upon our house, we proudly unveil the DIY Pizza Oven 2.0.
In our defense, the first version was built in a single beer-fueled afternoon, using found bricks from Freecycle; its appearance reflected its cost. But, because of the mortar holding the pieces together, although the oven was reused, it was not reusable.
Hence Brick Oven 2.0. Made from 100 freestanding bricks filled with sand, it makes the same great pizza, looks better, and can be easily dismantled and reconfigured.
In this age of micro-specialization, it’s easy to think that masonry and other DIY projects are beyond our competencies. Granted, the first brick oven looked like it was made by drunken gorillas, but that was mainly a product of using a demolished brick wall. As you can see from 2.0, the learning curve is steep. Small projects like these are great fun, accessible to pretty much anyone, and very inexpensive.

Actually, I loved the first pizza oven. It was simple, inexpensive and worked very well! The 2.0 is impressive. But is there a great difference in the finished product – pizza-.
I am still impressed with the original pizza oven, it was made with spirit.
