The Billion Gallon Problem: We’re Fat

It’s no secret America uses more gasoline that it did forty years ago. The reasons are obvious: increased suburbanization, less fuel-effeciency in our vehicles, and (according to a new report from the journal The Engineering Economist) because our nation is really, really fat.

Laura McLay, a doctoral student in computer science from Virginia Commonwealth University, used a variety of computational models to determine that America uses 938 million gallons of gasoline more than in 1960 solely because our collective weight gain.

While this number is a small fraction of the total, the problem will only grow in proportion to our waistlines. With the eating season of Halloween-Thanksgiving-Christmas about to begin, do the environment a favor: walk to the store to buy your Nutrageous. (So good!)
