The Backyard Monorail: Five Years Later
September 15th, 2006
Get your champagne ready: October marks the five year anniversary of Kim Pedersen’s first-of-its-kind transportation system, the backyard monorail. Housed in the garden of his Fremont, California home, the monorail cruises along nearly three hundred feet of track on pylons reaching eight feet in height. The train, first sketched by Pedersen as a high school junior, is the end result of thirty years of planning and five years of construction. One can only imagine the pride of owning a fully-functional monorail.
Total cost of track, train, and associated hardware: $4,070.07. A bargain!
Is it necessary to mention Mr. Pedersen is the president of 4,800 member Monorail Society?
The world could use more people like Kim Pedersen, a man willing to invest hundreds of hours to demonstrate his passion for a beneficial cause.
Also check out Peter Feigenbaum’s model railroad slum, a design feat no less impressive.
