Project Runway: Green Fashion
August 17th, 2006Oh Reality TV… what will we ever do with (or without) you? Well, just last night, Project Runway aired an episode called “Waste Not, Want Not” which called on the designers to visit a Waste Management recycling plant in northern New Jersey where they had 30 minutes to source all their materials for the next design challenge, recycled fashion. The elements included paper, plastic, and metal products, as well as peanut sacks (who knows where that came from…)
While the focus on reuse was cute and the best dresses were elegant and quite a bit better than the pieces that looked like “a craft project, backdrop for a high school play”, I found that the show did little more than ride the wave of green as a fad …after all, it’s a fashion show. I would have really liked to see expert consultants like Lynda Grose, explorations using new materials such as SLiKNonwovens, or even just addressing the end of life for clothing… How about thrift store shopping?
We’re excited about next year’s “Wearing Change” conference, a Vestal/ Yale collaboration.
