AutoDesk & Green Design

A few weeks ago, we mentioned that Autodesk was prepping a green design site for launch, and here it is. My initial response was to write it off as greenwashing, but certainly they have a good point in that the tools we use to design can have a huge effect on the work produced. And in fact, whether this is the start of a serious commitment to green design tools, or just an announcement that they’re doubling the number of ready-made “tree” components in their AutoCad product line, at least they’re paying attention.

Some things which caught my eye were: “By providing software that can be used to predict a design’s performance, we can help customers incorporate sustainable design principles into their practice, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.” This sounds good, but AutoDesk isn’t known for it’s good interfaces, so I wonder how useful it could be. I kind of wish SketchUp would release a green design component set. Solar panels, sun shaders, and maybe a palette of green materials?

And finally, a quote from the short movie on AutoDesk’s site which made me pay attention: “Building and operating buildings in the US is responsible for 40% of all energy usage.” Good point.
