April 20th, 2006

Above: The sun can reach up to 13.6 million Kelvin.

Last month, Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico got their Z machine to created plasmas exceeding 2 billion degrees Kelvin (or 3.6 billion oF), hotter than the interior of stars, by converting electrical energy to soft x-rays. This non-nuclear conversion produced four times as much energy as expected and is intriguing scientists everywhere.
