I stumbled across this image during a Google Image search. Can anyone tell me what it depicts? I believe that’s a Russian Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17. Are they racing? Are those jet engines on a truck?

Interestingly enough, I just read about this MIT invention. It’s a car that turns into a small airplane. The idea is that I could take my family a little bit further for a weekend trip in my car, and all I need is a Transition and a sport pilot’s license.

They claim 30 mpg of normal gas useage for flying, 40 mpg for driving on the highway.

this is an event that occurs every year at the Miramar Air Show in San Diego (remember Top Gun?). I’m sure it happens at other air shows, too, but that’s where I’ve seen it. The plane races the truck to the end of the airstrip. Sometimes the plane wins, sometimes it doesn’t
I think it is a MiG, and yes, those are jet engines on the truck. The owner holds a land speed record for trucks, quarter mile at 256mph and top speed of 376mph. He has to deploy a chute to slow below 160 mph or something, before he can even think of braking.
It’s a trip to see this thing fire up his turbines! He’ll dump fuel into the flow to create a massive plume. (yes, it’s very wasteful, but so is the whole show)
