Floppy Vinyl Records

March 22nd, 2006

I bought a used book to cut up (librarians gasp in horror!) the other day, and on flipping to the back page, I noticed it had a pocket with three square, paper-thin, flexible records, just like today we have CDs in the backs of some textbooks. “Old people” from the days of vinyl will forgive me for getting excited over something so everyday. This reminds me of the manually-turned record player/business card from Skippy Peanut Butter: Manual Cereal Box Record Player

I have two youthful memories associated with floppy vinyl:
    1. the whale song record inserted into National Geopraphic oh so many years ago.
    2. stealing the REM single on floppy vinyl in one of the early issues of “Sassy” magazine from Target. Back when Michael Stipe was supposedly dating the EIC of Sassy.

I absolutely love how the title of the vinyl is “Abnormal Psychology: Neurotic Behavior”. Coincidence? I think not!

They’re called flexidisks. Used to find them in music magazines/etc… the equivilent of giving away a CD sampler now. There are still places that press them. The band Born Against issued one a few years ago, and were able to sell them at record stores for under a dollar (when 45” singles usually cost 3-4 dollars)

Makes me think of Archies songs that used to come on the back of An Alpha-Bits box.
