Cassette Stylus Test
March 14th, 2006
After all the attention for hacked cassette decks on Make:BLOG and elsewhere, I was eager to hear what it sounded like to take the read-head out of a tape deck and play it across a tape “canvas”. So I grabbed the old deck (lots of fond childhood memories of pretending to be a radio station – I wipe a tear from my eye), and ripped it open. What an easy conversion! A 6 volt power supply and a bunch of Super 77 adhesive spray later, I had torn up the Marvin Gaye tape which sustained me on a New Haven to Montreal road trip, and was getting delightful scratchy noises.
So far, it’s pretty low quality, but I’ll post more later. See and listen here: Link

wow! that video is totally aweseome!
I really love the fact that it’s becoming easier, cheaper for anyone to create music. I think we’re really moving towards a space where everyone in the world, not just those with money, power, or privilege, can contribute to an organic, cultural blackhole, whose mere existence we all will benefit from.
forget college, mum! i’m totally becoming a “Safeway Scratch Deejay”!
