Evangelical Climate Initiative

February 11th, 2006

You may have seen this elsewhere but I thought it important to note. 86 Christian evangelical leaders have joined to support a climate initiative, stating, “millions of people could die in this century because of climate change, most of them our poorest global neighbors.” Among them is pastor Rick Warren (no relation), pictured above on the cover of Time magazine. The New York Times reports:

The statement calls for federal legislation that would require reductions in carbon dioxide emissions through “cost-effective, market-based mechanisms” — a phrase lifted from a Senate resolution last year and one that could appeal to evangelicals, who tend to be pro-business. The statement, to be announced in Washington, is only the first stage of an “Evangelical Climate Initiative” including television and radio spots in states with influential legislators, informational campaigns in churches, and educational events at Christian colleges.
I’m not personally religious, but I’m excited that religion and environmentalism are finding some common ground… the two are so often equated with partisanship that this is refreshing news.

I heard this guy interviewed on NPR recently regarding his group placing a full page ad in nytimes re: evangelicals moral mission to fight global warning. Among his assumptions is that global warming will worsen droughts, floods, and other natural distasters which disproportionately affect the poor. He asserts that fighting global warming is a way of helping the poor. He seemed like a solid person.

No relation? But you look just like him!

I know, I know, Bob, but I think the resemblance is mainly in the silky black shirts and pious expressions we both wear.

griecom – I’m always interested to hear what the specific basis of evangelical environmentalism is – you might be interested in an article in the latest issue of ELM, called Evangelicals and ‘Creation Care’
