More Efficient Turbines vs. Coal-to-Gas

November 30th, 2005

Wired News covered a new turbine design which exceeds the efficiency of traditional turbines by a margin. Investment in new energy technology is creating a minor boom in alternative energy tech, but “alternative petroleum” is also gaining strength. A company in Montana wants to mine coal and use a chemical process to turn it into liquid fuel. Let’s hope renewables win out, if only for the sake of Montana’s topsoil.

Company officials said traditional propeller-driven turbines are able to convert 25 percent to 40 percent of wind power into transmittable energy. But TMA’s design is 43 percent to 45 percent efficient, creating up to 80 percent more power from the same wind.
