Defensive Design

November 10th, 2005

Women’s self-defense against sexual assault has often been addressed through education and policy. It is about time that design has become an avenue for empowerment as well. While the approaches may vary: from FemDefence’s visceral armored tampon and marketing campaign to RedStart Design ’s Subtle Safety ring that transforms into brass knuckles, the message is the same. Unlike a can of mace, these two products serve as personal symbols of safety and empowerment rather than overt weapons, though I bet you could do some damage either way.
If you are in the New York area, you can check out the Subtle Safety ring at MoMA’s SAFE: Design Takes on Risk.

The proper latin would be “tampon-cum-dagger” but the whole phrase is a bit too distractingly risky, entendre-wise, to even attempt for the discriminating writer.

    Hi!
I am a jeweller and I make all sort of staff but also “axe rings”. I made them for beauty, but one can punch the other if
it is necessary. Check them out!
