Solar Oven from Windshield Reflector
October 13th, 2005
This $3.00 lightweight DIY solar oven uses a car windshield sunshade, which is available in most urban areas, and reaches 350 degrees Fahrenheit. We used a pretty expensive solar oven this past summer at Vestal’s Palo Alto location to bake cookies and cook chicken soup, which were delicious. Kathy Dahl-Bredine writes:
I have found this totally simple solar oven extremely practical, as it is so lightweight and easy to carry along anywhere. . . . I have cooked black beans in about the same amount of time as on a gas stove; I’ve used it to bake breads, granola, brownies, lasagna, all sorts of vegetables, and to purify water.

yah, it takes a little longer than a typical oven and you have to check it a bit more, but other than that it’s fantastic! some things (like tea) you can just leave all day and forget about.
we were able to make brownies, pasta, and i bet it’d be great for potatoes or chicken! yum!
