Biggest Gardening Machine Ever

October 18th, 2005

Pruned, which consistently displays fantastic and stunning imagery which almost moves me to tears, recently posted about something a little more, uh, Iron Giant: pictured above, this leviathan is a football field tall, two and a half long, and weights 45,500 tons. It digs at a rate of 10 meters per minute. Good god:

This is the largest digging machine (or trencher or rotating shovel) in the world. It was built by Krupp and is shown here crossing a road in Germany on the way to its destination, an open air coal mine. Although at the mine the treads are unnecessary, it was cheaper to make the machine self-propelled than to try and move it with conventional hauling equipment.

I got this photo along with a powerpoint in a chain email so I can’t help but wonder if this is photoshoped, like that sweet shark photo turned out to be.

    still pretty sweet, though…

no,there’s a lot of other photos on the site, and that would be quite a photoshop chore. it’s real.

In the vein of awesome machinery, Vestal WebDesign client Kevin Fine of Turning Point pointed me to the Kevin Kelly – Cool Tools blog which posts a neat tool, gadget or useful piece of software each day.

I’ve seen this on the Discovery Channel. The treads actually are necessary at the mine, lest the machine be limited to digging one circle and then becoming useless. The decision to drive it rather than disassemble and haul it for the move was indeed based on economics, though.

    kick-butt, then!
