Smart Engineering Meets Appealing Design
September 29th, 2005It’s been nice to watch the Toyota Prius modify and enhance its car design since it first came out in the US in 2001. But it’s been even nicer to see other car companies follow suit.
In 2006, Honda plans to release a juiced up version of its current Civic Hybrid, not only giving it a distinguished, sleeker exterior car design but greater fuel efficiency. All this and a stellar marketing campaign to match: “It’ll Reverse Your Thinking.”
Seems like car companies not only finally realize there’s quite a market for greener design but that its market does not comprise of cutting-edge-unresponsive hippies alone.

I think this statement is true of Honda, and perhaps Toyota, but certainly not of most American car companies. American car companies want to use hybrid technology not for making highly efficient and environmentally friendly cars, but instead for making existing huge cars more affordable as gas prices rise.

This is a certainly a valid point. Admitedly, the car industry still has a rather long way to go in understanding the green consumer and their economic potential. Hopefully, these products will continue to prove profitable and raise the brow of the American industry and public.
Also, on the flip side, if these American car companies you mention can reach the kind of people who drive Hummers and convince them that going for a greener alternative is a good idea, I think we may still be heading in the right direction.
