From ID to AARP

September 26th, 2005

While many of us at Vestal read the design magazines (ID, Metropolis, HOW, Surface, etc) and blogs (Treehugger, Make, BoingBoing, Core77), we also like to keep up on things not-design. One new magazine that I’ve come to enjoy is actually quite old. Hanging out with my 90 year-old grandmother this past weekend, I began reading the AARP magazine.

It’s interesting to me to think that perhaps the most relevant or interesting magazines might actually be the ones that are least intended for me, as a consumer. The AARP publication has gotten me thinking about how we live our lives. ...a sort of jump start into thinking from a perspective of my golden years. After all, if I can live my life now in my 20’s with wisdom of my 80’s-to-be and the energy of my teens, I think I just might make it : )

The June issue of the AARP mag also has a neat article of Paul Newman, of movie and spaghetti sauce fame. To date, Newman’s Own has donated all after tax profits to charities, totaling over $175 million. Also, Newman’s daughter Nell has recently spun off an organic division called Newman’s Own Organics. Totally sweet.

Notably, in the article, Nell Newman quotes Walt Whitman’s 1855 prelude of “Leaves of Grass.” I think we can all aspire to live life as fully.

This is what you shall do: Love
the earth and sun and the animals,
despise riches, give alms to every
one that asks, stand up for the stupid
    and crazy, devote your income
and labor to others, hate tyrants,
    argue not concerning God, have
    patience and indulgence toward
    the people…and your very flesh
    shall be a great poem.
    -Walt Whitman
