Potato-powered Web Server

July 27th, 2005

Posted a while ago on Make:Blog, this is a homebrew web server that runs off of… well do I really have to explain? Ever made a battery from a potato in science class?

Anyways, it now runs off of a AAA battery, on which it can probably run for about a year. My favorite part is the photo of the potatoes sprouting, and the voltage graph of one “hit” to the server. Not a lot of power in there.

I am reminded of a story my boss told me. He had to judge a middle school science fair, and this one project was two kids that set up two potatoes in racing lanes with a light at one end and tried to make them grow in the direction of the light and see if one was faster than another. They told him with a straight face that they’d been working on this project for weeks.

So my boss now has a picture of a potato on his door that says, “Don’t get caught up in the potato race!” It’s excellent advice.

i think the potatoes and Sealand should get to talking… maybe have a few drinks…

i can just envision fields of little orange life rafts of floating baby potatoes now. sigh
