Lobster Telephone

July 13th, 2005

The artist Salvador Dali, an admittedly odd character, once became enraged at a waiter for bringing him a telephone instead of a lobster. He had requested a telephone. The way I heard it, the Bell Telephone company later produced this Lobster Telephone for Dali; however, it seems to have been at the Tate Modern in London, so perhaps Dali made it himself. Has anyone else heard of this?

also – this is a white version that I particularly liked; the more famous is red on a black telephone.

perhaps it was moved to the tate modern?...but i have the privelege of saying that i DID in fact see the lobster telly while i was in london.

i saw it at “Dali Universe” which is in a building across from Parliament/Big Ben. The building which looks over the river is next to The London Eye and houses Dali Universe, the Saatchi Gallery and the London Aquarium.

it is possible that “Dali Universe” carried a copy, and not the original. anyhow, at this point, i’m just bragging…;)

I think Joe’s in the right here- I just toured the Tate Modern in late March and saw neither lobster nor phone to the best of my recollection. It was an interesting place though, one great piece of modern art for every 9 “look at me! look at me! I’m modern!”

the lobster phone is currently in the Tate Modern in London, I saw it both in January 2005 as well as this past January when I went. It’s awesome! I want one!

The Dali lobster phone can be seen in the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, Holland. This museum owns a large collection of Dali’s works.
