iSee: Paths of Least Surveillance
July 18th, 2005
iSee is a website that maps surveillance cameras across Manhattan so people who do not wish to be filmed can plot “camera-safe” routes. They also have a terrific PDF that maps the growth in number of CCTV cameras in neighborhoods across the city. Funny, I remember reading recently that George Orwell Square in London was put under CCTV surveillance in the past year.

i heard some rumor (from a native londoner) that the average londonder is caught on camera hundreds of times a day by CCTV.
weird.
i’m not sure whether or not its true, but it makes for a good story, no?

Yeah, they mention often on BoingBoing.net that London is the most filmed city in the world. CCTV everywhere. My pal Alexander White always says that since there’s a law where you can request a tape of yourself from any CCTV-using business, legally, a couple dozen committed people could bring down the whole system. Especially given that they have to blur out everyone else’s faces when they give you the tape. It’d put anyone with a CCTV setup out of business.
CCTV cycles on a 6hr or 12hr (or something) rotation, then tapes are switched; but after a little while they record over the old tapes. So only a couple days or so are ususally kept.
