Interactive Furniture
July 1st, 2005
The Junction, one of Cambridge’s arts venues, unveiled a series of interactive furniture pieces, including solar-powered benches and trashbins that giggle. creepy, huh?
Andrew Shoben, from Greyworld, said: ‘At first glance it may look like nothing has changed at all but the bins and benches all have unique personalities. They are what’s called ‘generative’ so that over time they develop more and more personality.’
The basis of this project was to help keep bins and benches safe from theft.
While the thought is endearing, I’m more caught on the idea of interactive waste bins: a bin that could do something rewarding when a person throws away trash. I know…I know…people SHOULD be throwing away trash on their own for their own sake and for the sake of generations to come, but what better way to motivate people to throw away their trash than to have a trashcan that can do something super cool (Brand name ideas? TRASHCANS CAN cue laughter). I mean, kids (and by “kids”, I’m really referring to myself) buy gumballs from those machines just to watch it spiral from the top dome all the way to the bottom: it’s the interaction that makes the 50 cent gumball THAT much more worth it. It’s a spacey idea and needs some development. Maybe a trashcan that turns trash into gumballs?!

Sounds like from one of Douglas Adams books
Sighing doors, deprimated roboters giggling trashcans.
Douglas turns out to have been a fortune teller at last!

let’s start a religion on it…something akin to scientology?
