House Printing Revisited

July 14th, 2005

A while ago I heard about this automated house builder, or more accurately, a “house printer”, but the imagery was pretty poor and I didn’t get a good idea of how it worked. These photos, depicting the printer laying down one 5” layer at a time, as well as a number of miniature prototype homes, are pretty great. My strange fantasy is to see a large field with these concrete printers running on long booms (like watering systems on farms) and printing whole neighborhoods all at once. Run them on adobe mud and mix in seeds in some, or vary materials as you go; it’s terrifying and beautiful!
