Foam Spine Immobilizer

July 28th, 2005

When assessing and treating injuries in the woods, spinal injuries are a major concern, since patients have to be transported over rough terrain without damaging their spinal cord. This prototype project proposes using a “non-sticking, antiseptic foam” which hardens around the patient’s body and immobilizes it. I wonder if this could be kept in a small compressed can for extreme portability? Designed by Ralf Becker.

I wonder how you would get the patient out of the foam when they arrived at their destination?

with those types of polymers that “freeze” into hard molds instantaneously, they usually give off lots of heat.

i wonder what they’re using or what they’re doing to prevent that.

I can only hope that it’s standard equipment for those little barrels that St. Bernards carry on their collars. With the booze, of course.

Reminds me of the stuff they used to immobolize the Hulk in that unfortunate Ang Lee movie.

i remembered using some stuff like that for roof leak repairs, took a bit but i found an old can half full, an sprayed some at the cat , i mean a paper towel, and it was cold to the touch the whole time drying, but very sticky, both might have the same base.

I myself ask the question of whether a large boner would be able to slowly penetrate and eventually break through the foam.
