A New-Fangled Keyboard

July 15th, 2005

Here’s a new idea for a keyboard: every key of the Optimus keyboard is a stand-alone display showing exactly what it is controlling at this very moment. You can set it up for different languages, or different programs, such as Photoshop (see above). Additionally, there’s a block of keys that allows you to switch between different applications (and looks like the OS X dock). I like the idea – I wonder what using it is actually like.

what I want to know is how they did their rendering – that’s not a real keyboard, and the images on their site are incredible!

That’s pretty sweet. I wonder if it’s actually useful in helping people’s situational awareness, or just eye candy?
Either way, I want to convince my lab to buy one for “research” purposes…

I was going to post on this very item… seems I’ve been beat to the punch. So inspired was I, that I wrote the fellows at the Art. Lebedev Studio to commend them on a Well Done. I fear I might be looking at the keyboard more than the screen, but all the same I want one! Whilst wanting, I’d like to order up one of the new Batmobiles too… ‘twould make the East Bay commute so much more enjoyable! Traffic? No problemo…
