Wonder Man

June 7th, 2005

It’s not too often you’ll hear me refer to the “man behind the woman” with such a smile.

As the inventor of the lie detector, a Harvard psychology professor, and strong believer and shaper in the world of comics, William Marston has had quite an impact on American culture. Through the creation of Wonder Woman, Marston meant to create a female role model for America who was capable of being powerful but still sexy and who engaged with submission and domination, often in the form of bondage, in a care-free manner.

Unlike the ambiguous nature of the Batman and Robin duo, Marston openly admitted to intentionally implanting imagery of bondage into the comics in hopes that the American youth would engage in altering gender power dynamics. For 1941, this was a rather progressive step in gender relations.
