Google just released their Google Maps API this morning, and I put it to use immediately – here’s an map depicting Star Wars ATATs attacking Palo Alto. Vertical scrolling game to follow, so you can save everyone.

That’s very interesting. Can you make one with Captain Kirk?

... it wont work! damnyou internet explorer! DAMN YOU MICROSITH!

Internet Explorer hoses this up so bad it refuses to render the page… you can see a partial load, right up to the bottom of the map, then it kicks back out. I verified this on your site and on http://mushika.blogspot.com, and I’m heading over to browsercam to test it out on everything.

Browsercam results are up at http://www.browsercam.com/public.aspx?proj_id=173175 … your site is pics 21-40. IE fails consistently, Konqueror renders the page but not the map, Netscape 4.x has no idea what the hell is going on, and every other browser gets it right.

that’s part of the reason why we promote the use of Firefox on our site.
It’s a great browser that can be used by Macs and PCs alike and has this wonderful feature where you can keep a bunch of windows in tabs. i love it!

crap, foobario – I heard IE doesn’t take this well, which is unfortunate – as to Konqueror and Netscape, well, I’m just using Google’s API, so I’d prefer to wait for Google to make it compliant, since they are many and I am one. This, unfortunately, means Konqueror won’t make it, which is too bad since I very much like it.

I amend that – it’s not likely that Konqueror will make it – unless Google has a particular soft spot for KDE

I saw on BoingBoing that you created this great funny hack.
So I thought I could add some animation. Now you have an animated Invasion over Google Map: some Mozillas and some Gnus are invading Microsoft office in Redmond (the blue E).
Here the link to the blog post
http://moloko.itc.it/paoloblog/archives/2005/07/01/animated_invasion_over_google_map.html
and here the direct link to the animated map
http://sra.itc.it/people/massa/private/gmaps/gmaps_hack.html
Be sure to check the HTML code (with the Javascript code that moves invaders around).
In the blog post I also ponder that
“It should be very easy to create real playable games on Google Maps. Here are some ideas: – playing Risk on the real world map (with the ability to zoom in/out to combat at different scales). Extend Jrisk or JavaRisk (code available on SourceForge). – playing FreeCiv on real world maps. Modify FreeCiv source code. – driving a car race on streets of the real world. – much more I guess”
Thanks for inspiration!

Hey paolo – that’s terrific! I hope to find some time in the next few days to program a vertical scroller – but we’ll see.

As the Sith spread across the galaxy, subjugating planet after planet, a lone warrior seeks out a weapon of legend to save his people.
In the times since great wars laid waste to Prias, its people have learned to embrace a simple life, away from the perils of technology and war. As the mighty Sith army spreads across the galaxy, subjugating every planet in its path, all the people of Prias can do is wait, their world protected by an energy shield held in place by ancient towers. While the people wait in fear, one Jedi trained by Master Oram Bren will be chosen to be the future leader of Prias, a title decided by a vote of the entire population of the planet. But little do they know that one Jedi’s dark secret could spell their doom.
