Sometimes you wander into a community so insular that you’re at a loss to understand what’s going on – such is Sodarace, which seems to be a site where visitors/competitors construct (often immensely complex) automatons online, and race them on a 2 dimensional track. Basic laws of physics seem to exist, albeit in two dimensions, and the result is an amazing array of beautiful “creatures”. Contests are held between human-designed ones and computer-evolved examples – see for yourself who’s in the lead.

i’ve played this thing before!! it’s the most pointlessly addicting thing ever.

it reminds me of that program that takes differential equations and quanitfies them into spaces and structures…i’ll look it up.

i see they’ve updated this site since the last time i’ve visited (some yrs / mo? ago).

i only ever dabbled with them, like a kid with some pipe cleaners, but never knew you were supposed to race them. i bet there’s some great math in this.
