PBS Funding Threatened
June 30th, 2005When I was young, PBS for adults was nothing more than drab concerts, ballet and opera. Man have things changed! While watching yesterday, I couldn’t pull myself away – It was like Discovery channel met the History channel met current events, only jazzier. When did public television get so good?!
First we watched, the New Heroes about “social enterpeneurs,” people creatively combatting global issues. Next there was a show called Point of View, a showcase for independent non-fiction film, which did a 20 year then-and-now look at people with dwarfism. Following all of this was In the Life, an unprecedented series designed for the LGBTQ crowd.
Hands-down, PBS wins my applause, awe, and respect.

This is particularly important, because with the resigning of Bill Moyers, it has come to light that the current Administration wants to cut public broadcasting, a move which many consider dangerous when current Media is so commercialized and government as powerful as always.
But aside from a potential buffering of powers, why do we really need public broadcasting? Is it any more, less polarized than regular broadcasting? How about more informative? Does it spend its time more effectively than the boring old Reality TV? I’m not totally sure, but I’d sure as hell like it if it stuck around long enough for me to find out.
