Nanowires Discovered in Bacteria

Recently there have been a number of articles on a strain of bacteria which generates electricity by consuming various toxins – and the potential for directly generating power from sewage or toxic waste. University of Massachusetts at Amherst researchers have uncovered a fascinating feature of these bacteria, known as Geobacter: they use tiny nanowires made of proteins to transport electrons, as pictured above.
