FBI investigates Louie… Louie.

May 6th, 2005

Originally created by Richard Berry in the 50s, Louie, Louie was a song performed by the Kingsmen in 1962. An immediate hit, it became further popularized as rumors circulated that the true lyrics were dirty and could be heard when slowed. Soon everyone was hearing the Emperor’s new clothes: Youths began purchasing en masse and parents became increasingly upset with the demon dubbed “Rock n’ Roll.”

The hype was built to such a point that in 1964 the FBI began a two year investigation to determine the true lyrics, as many radio stations and parents banned the song altogether. In the end, the FBI determined the song was not obscene but also “unintelligible at any speed.”

Perhaps we will laugh at Homeland Security in the same way one day.
