Vasariano Corridoio

April 5th, 2005

The city of Florence, home of the powerful Medici family, has always been a place of mystery. (Think of them, as one PBS special proclaims, as the “Godfathers of the Renaissance,” a dynasty of a family who dominated Florentine politics for 2 and a half centeries and funded an explosion in the arts in the dark ages after the fall of Rome.)

So it should come as no suprise that the family left behind a secret corridor that runs over a kilometer through the Uffizi Gallery, the most famous museum in Italy, complete with two-sided mirrors and a gallery of world-class self-portraits.

Most tourists are never even aware that the spot exists and it is only accessible by special, pre-reserved tour.
