The High Line
April 15th, 2005
Have you all heard of the High Line, the elevated railway that runs through much of lower Manhattan? Then perhaps you’ve heard of the plans to turn it into a public park-
Last Monday, Elizabeth Diller of renowned Diller & Scofidio came to lecture here at Yale – she pulled a (lame-o) “I threw my prepared speech out” line, but made up for it by telling us (and showing us) a lot about their current projects, including their latest work on the High Line renovation. It includes some terrific ideas, like an “urban beach” complete with sand and water, as well as an outdoor public theater. Pictures of their boards and images are available here

I actually just went to several senior art thesises, here at Wes, which dealt with reclaiming spaces, and I have to admit, I love the ideas. The concept of this “Urban-Nature Fusion” is quite exciting and more responsible than our culture has been acting as-of-late.
It seems, in a way, almost like one of those space station bubbles they used to conceptualize building on the Moon or Mars to sustain life, except less escapist. I like where this is going. _
