Pill Bottles

April 26th, 2005

So a few days ago I witnessed a discussion about a pill bottle here, and it got me thinking… this is a real problem… do you know anyone who has put eardrops in their eye?... well I do and this can be a traumatic experience… So yes, label and packaging work would be a great improvement, but what about us who forget to take our pills, what is there for us…? I feel a real synergy coming on – Introducing the SIMpill by Med Minder:

What if your pill bottle sent you an SMS to take your pills! Over the top maybe, but medicines are often most effective if taken at their prescribed intervals. To that end, there is the SIMpill. We can talk about the name later, but its an interesting concept, no?

“A South African doctor has developed the SIMpill, a pill bottle that uses SMS to monitor how often pills are being taken and can send alerts to a patient’s phone if they have missed a dose by mistake. Each time the cap is removed, a small cellular transmitter in the bottle sends a secure SMS to a central server, which stores information about the intervals in which the prescription should be administered. If something goes wrong with the dosage, the service sends a message to the patient’s cell phone, alerting them of the discrepancy. Since many long-term infectious diseases become resistant to medication if they miss a dose, the SIMpill can make it easier to maintain a more structured regimen.”
