These cylindrical chairs were designed by Italian product designer Joe Colombo in 1969. A short synopsis of his work and more terrific photos can be found here. Not to be confused with the Mafia don.

the sweet part about this chair is that it’s made with PVC plastic tubing (i.e. it has the potential for recyclable origin / sustainability).
they also actually have these in the collection at the MoMA.

Actually, PVC is not a sustainable material – poly-vinyl chloride is one of the more toxic substances we come into contact with in our daily lives – it contains more than a hundred toxic compounds, etc., talk to Greenpeace. But given that Colombo uses a lot of polymers, a recycleable, recycled, or even biopolymer could easily be substituted for much of what he does.

you learn something new everyday… (thanks jeff!)
This actually makes me consider how many other highly toxic things we live with complacently. We make such a big deal out of things like Asbestos but then don’t worry about how air conditioners sometimes make us feel wonky.
How do we start questioning the health issues behind the materials we all use every day?
