DIY Infrared Webcam

March 13th, 2005

An enterprising Slashdotter has figured out that film negatives of black scenes (i.e. with the lens cap on) act as filters permitting only near-infrared, and proceeded to swap out his webcam’s IR filter with cutouts of the film. He now has an IR webcam.

I don’t understand the need to hack the camera at all. I can understand removing any IR filters (even if they aren’t particularly effective on a $20 camera) but what is the point of adding the film negative?

Point any remote control at a standard issue, off the shelf web cam and you’ll see right away that it has no trouble ‘seeing’ infrared.

I added an Infrared spotlight to my webcam and it works just fine as a night vision cam as well as a regular cam – no hacking required.

Because they work better when you remove the filter. The blocking out of normal light is pointless though for night vision, but does nicely when trying to see through light colored clothes :-)
