Blackspot Sneaker

March 10th, 2005

For those of you who read the magazine Adbusters, this may be familiar – the long-planned Blackspot Sneaker went on sale last year, and I desperately want a pair. Not only are they stylish as all heck, they’re made from organic hemp, 70% biodegradable rubber, and made by Portuguese workers for a living wage. And they’re the anti-brand, the non-Nike, non-Reebok, yes-hipster choice.

Perhaps most interesting about the company is that it is literally owned by its customers: a purchase of a pair of Blackspot sneakers translates to 1 vote as a shareholder of the company. This means owners get to direct the company in terms of design, social/environmental responsibility, etc. Look out for Blackspot 2, as well as other more diverse Blackspot products.
